It’s all Missoni’s fault

Missoni – yes, Missoni of Italian kooky-cool knits fame – this is all your fault.

I’ve only recently been convinced that colours are my friend. (“But…” she protested, “there’s so many shades of grey!”)

It may have taken time, but falling in love with the colourful patterns of Missoni was inevitable.

The Missoni pattern is so distinctive that when I saw this in an op shop I just HAD to pick it up despite the fact that it’s two sizes too big and an odd cut to match.

It’s not quite wearable but too good to throw back into the op shop circuit, which leaves me in a dilemma…

So help me girls, I need your opinion!

Should I:

  • keep the cardigan and just resize it?
  • make it into a skirt?
  • or… submit it to one of the designers in our fashion show and see what they come up with?

Diary of a fashion show

You’ve seen this to this:

And this to this:

But soon…you’re going to  see ugly clothes get transformed in ways that will COMPLETELY blow your mind.

That’s right…THE UGLEE CHALLENGE IS BEING TURNED INTO A FASHION SHOW.

Along with Cris of couture + love + madness I’m going to be putting the Uglee Challenge to South Australian designers to see what high fashion madness they can come up with.

And we’re going to share it all with you. The stress, the fun, the tears and the laughs.

If you’ve ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes of a fashion show, who’s involved or even if you just love a bit of Adelaide gossip, you’ll find out on caughtcouture!

More details coming soon!

Eat your heart out Alexander Wang [aka the uglee challenge]

The S/S 10 collection by Alexander Wang must be one of the most blogged this year (apart from everything McQueen, those Miu Miu clogs, that Miu Miu cat print, resort resort resort blah blah blah).

[for example.]

It’s the loose draped silhouettes and the sexy cut-outs combined with the casual sporty look that has all of us going CRAZY, almost as if we suddenly had access to Rumi Neely‘s wardrobe.

One of the pieces is this pretty cool skirt:

[the shirt skirt by Alexander Wang]

Now I’ve been wanting to make a shirt into a skirt for ages, but being lazy in the sewing department didn’t try until I saw this skirt and thought come on Alex, I can do better than that.

Enter…the uglee challenge.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s pretty simple:

[find an ugly piece of clothing and make it wearable]

Thank you to the Irving Baby $2 sale for this huge polyester gem:

I saw it across the room and knew it was destined to be a draped skirt.

So I did some snipping…some pleating…

And…

Voilà!

I’m really happy that I could preserve the original pocket, the collar and some of the buttons =)

Detail:

Unfortunately my hair isn’t long enough for the signature side plait anymore =(

[tee by stylestalker, an Aussie brand I've also been seeing a lot in blogs (and for good reason)]

Can’t wait to find more ugly stuff to makeover – and if you have any suggestions or an uglee remake of your own, give me a msg! xx

The Uglee Challenge

The challenge is simple: take ugly clothing and make it into something cool.

So I picked this up at the Irving Baby sale for the grand total of $2…

[exhibit a: oversized leather skirt photographed in dodgy ebay listing style]

Absolutely unwearable.

I snapped it up for the colour – Garance tips beige to be the Next Big Thing. At first I thought it was leatherette but as it turns out it’s real leather – set to be in soon (if Hermes AW 2010 is anything to go by).

This turned out to be a problem as I didn’t have the right needle for the sewing machine. My poor, poor fingers. I now know why handmade leather bags cost so much…

After a couple of darts and a zip that cost twice as much as the skirt:

Success! (not bad considering I don’t have any dressmaking experience…)

It made an appearance at Fashion Avenue, but…don’t think it will become a wardrobe staple :P
