Looking for the light

This was one of those unexpected perfect vintage finds – the fit, the ruffles, the colour.

Things are starting to get hectic and right now I’d really love a couple of days to just laze around in the sun, dreamy-Sofia-Coppola style.

But there’s lots to be done, things to learn, people to meet – and not much sunshine. So I’ll be enjoying what I can of it! Lots of exciting things are coming up, some of which I’m hoping to share here, but in the meantime I’ve gotta work if only to afford my expensive food habit…

Maddie

Maddie is the cutest.

[nobody panic! I know origami AND...pilates]

She entered the fashion show giveaway I had a few weeks ago within 10 minutes of me posting it, and funnily enough her entry came up as the winner (although unfortunately she couldn’t make it, so she got a goodie bag instead!)

She has a knack for finding quirkycool things, many of which she posts on her blog Oh, this old thing. I felt rude for randomly interjecting several times when I noticed a) her stockings, b) her bag, c) her other bag, d) the stickers on her diary, e) another bag…etc, all of which were refreshingly humourous or cute.

That also extends to creating things, like this skirt made entirely out of ties

Oh, and she gets extra props in my book because she used to work at Nadia’s House of Serendipity down at the bay.

Peachy keen

Too much watching Pretty Woman and seeing people who are mysteriously getting sunshine right now flaunt their shorts led to this…

I had a sudden craving for peach-coloured clothing, but the shoulder pads and polka dots on the overshirt seemed to make it just right. Plus I’ve been wanting to wear these shorts – a steal at $30 from the Whistles clearance store a couple of weeks ago. Hello, bad 80s fashion!

A Single Man

When you hear that Tom Ford is directing a movie, you know that it will be picture-perfect – minimalistic but with an incredible attention to detail.

A Single Man didn’t disappoint. Colin Firth plays a well-liked but disenchanted English professor in 60s America who is contemplating suicide following the death of his gay partner.

Every frame is gorgeous, though a photogenic cast including Julianne Moore and Nick Hoult doesn’t hurt.

It’s a lot of smoking and a lot of fun, including Colin Firth + Julianne Moore dancing to the Blues Brothers.

I was enchanted by a scene where Julianne does her eye make-up – eyes are a recurring motif throughout the film and hers are beautifully done. I’ve loved 60s eye make-up since Russh did a feature on Edie Sedgewick style in one of their first issues.

I couldn’t help giving it a shot…

Unfortunately it doesn’t work so well with double eyelids so it probably won’t be a normal look..

I really recommend watching A Single Man – apart from the cinematography, there’s a lot of commentary about society’s attitudes towards gender roles in the 60s, and some biting truths about politics, relationships and life.

I wish I was a Parisienne – deux

There’s something I want to ask you…

Are pants acceptable at a fashion show?

I’ve never been a girly girl. I lived in jeans as a kid and to this day I like to give my outfits an androgynous twist – blazers with dresses or oversized shirts tucked in.

But the reason why I like to wear pants at fashion shows it that they’re harder to dress up. They spell casual – Audrey Hepburn padding about her apartment in cigarette pants and loafers à la Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE huge ballgowns and killer dresses. But the point of an amazing dress is that it doesn’t take much to make it look good – pants are a challenge.

But what do you think? Are pants too casual? Should they reserved for the boys and the models?

Amanda

When it comes to fashion, Amanda is a bit like a superhero.

You might know her as one half of the duo behind Not So Naked, which is undeniably one of Adelaide’s top fashion blogs. I like to think of her as the Adelaide version of fashiontoast, with a style that is distinctive but instantly evocative.

Amanda is confident enough in her own style to be able to sort through racks of clothes and pick out what she likes instantly,  a skill she uses in vintage stores and on blogshops to build an enviable wardrobe on a student budget.

But in the everyday world she’s an engineering student who’s not only ambitious but really passionate about social justice. We jumped rapidly from discussing boots to banking careers to the effectiveness of various not-for-profit organisations. And I don’t mean the superficial phrases parroted by pageant contestants, but a genuine concern about human trafficking and the vulnerability of women in developing countries.

Why fashion blogging, then? Well, it’s about fun. She started Not So Naked as a way of pursuing fashion as a hobby. A while later she teamed up with Chanelle Leslie, another stylish Adelaidean. Now, their photos, outfits and coverage of music/events have earned them freebies & coverage from across the world.

I think it’s often more interesting to find out about the people behind the blogs – well here’s a girl who’s bubbly and intelligent as well as stylish.

So you’re more likely to see Amanda working in audit than Vogue. But you WILL see her on the catwalk for a good cause at the bU fashion parade later this year. We’ll keep you updated!

Selena

[on Twin St, Adelaide]

Who said it’s impossible to love Adelaide and love fashion at the same time?

When she’s not at her full-time job or writing for her fashion blog dearselena.com, Selena Battersby is hard at work promoting Adelaide fashion to the world through the Adelaide Fashion Collective.

You only need to look at her to know that she’s a fashionista, and you only need to talk to her for a few minutes before you realise that she has the lowdown on everything going on in Adelaide, and she LOVES it.

The Adelaide Fashion Collective is only a couple of months old but is already one of the most comprehensive listings of Adelaideans who style, blog, design and generally obsess about fashion. It was born from a realisation that Adelaide actually has a lot of fashion talent, followed by frustration over the lack of recognition that it gets.

Selena labels herself an organiser, and you have to admit that getting an entire collective together and setting up a website on your own initiative isn’t easy. But perhaps a more accurate label is ‘connector’. She pioneered the fashion blogger meet-up which led to the collective being formed, and seems to know the who’s who of the industry in Adelaide.

Did I mention she’s also studying Fashion Design at TAFE and is working on creating her own label in her spare time?

[Selena, in her own creation - from dearselena.com]

If her personal style is anything to go by, her collection will be something to watch out for. As you can see, she loves draped silhouettes and a statement jacket. “I collect blazers,” she confesses, “jackets are kinda my signature item. And shoes. And jewellery. And…”

[outfit shot from her blog dearselena.com]

If you’re an Adelaidean into fashion, I can’t say this enough: check out the Adelaide Fashion Collective. And make sure you submit your details to the directory if you’re a blogger or have your own label!

SO one month ago

N and I meet up often to talk cameras and indulge in lunches neither of us can afford. (The second might be why we can’t afford the first.)

Anyway, we decided to play around with the camera a month or so ago and I never got around to posting the results…

Adelaide kids, can you guess where this is?

I’ve realised I go through two-week crushes on styles of dressing…this was a phase when I figured that a blazer + minidress + boots could solve any wintry-day blues.

I forever love these boots – they’re vintage and have held up beautifully. You just can’t get leather like that anymore.

Oh and I love the wall in the first picture…Melbourne has to graffiti its walls for character, Adelaide just has it :P

I wish I was a Parisienne

It is difficult to study when you’d rather be sipping chocolat chaud from a bowl in some tiny café in Montmartre or browsing through racks of black, black, and wait…more black at Kooples.

You know, when you start going to the Colette website just to listen to the music as if you were actually in the store, or devouring Garance Doré’s blog like a child devours macarons

Yael Naim – Far far

And then you find white high-waisted fleece jodphurs and you simply HAVE to find a way to wear them, even if it isn’t as cold as Paris in winter.

Ah, Paris, je t’aime

croak

Watching the Banksy movie (Exit through the gift shop) and seeing how street artists work, you realise that everyone’s got a signature in them somewhere.

Apparently mine is wearing heels too high for me to cope with (SO not true).

Buuuut on exiting (not through the gift shop) we did run into this guy with a fantastic colourful jumper. A wanted a photo instantly, but when she asked him he said “Wait…it gets better…”

…which is not always what you want to hear from a guy lifting up the front of his jumper, but when we saw the t-shirt he was wearing underneath we nearly died laughing.

Yep… it had a photo of him wearing the jumper. (A going-away gift from his friends.)

I completely messed up the photo, because I’m an idiot who does things like accidentally flick to manual focus and not realise until it’s too late, but here it is…

Love it! (And I’m so sorry for messing up your photo.)

What’s your signature piece?
